JOB SUMMARY

Work as a team member to production weld and/or weld repair castings, dies, molds, fixtures and miscellaneous equipment per weld procedures and customer specifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Operate hand grinding tools (both belt and stone).

· Operate metal cleaning equipment, water flow and sonic equipment.

· Adjust parts by use of presses, heat or other dimensional tooling.

· Operate hand sandblast and auto blast units.

· Prolonged gripping standing or sitting and pushing, pulling and lifting.

· Moderate length of concentration

· Must be able to work and function in a fast-paced environment.

· Basic knowledge of computers

· Must be able to read and interpret Product Criteria (PC) and Activity Instructions (AI).

· Must be able to function as a member of a team and be able to work under general supervision.

· Must be able to maintain expected quality levels.

· Comply with all site required policies and procedures including but not limited to: EHS, Quality, Code of Conduct and the LaPorte Employee Guidebook.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Job responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

· Weld repair / production weld (fabrication weld) castings to "Class A" requirements (FPI and X-Ray acceptance).

· Occasional maintenance and fixture welding on various alloys including aluminum.

· Fabrication of copper backups used to perform welds.

· Operate all aspects of the production AC/DC power source and all components of the weld torch that are used to perform the job.

· Determine weld wire alloy designation and sizes.

· Determine allowable weld sizes and locations.

· Determine correct power source parameters.

· Determine gas settings for welding torch and backups

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Welding Requirements:

· Must be able to successfully complete welders' certification tests in nickel, cobalt and iron based alloy groups within (5) months of training. Tests based on successful results in FPI,

X-ray and metallography.

· Must be able to successfully complete Welder Testing Criteria.

· Must pass visual acuity examination required for certified welder position.

· Formalized training in Manual Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) required.

· Experience in routing out casting defects and blending welds preferred.

· Mechanical ability required.

· Proficiency in use of gauges and measuring skills required.

Weld Blend/Prep Route Out Requirements:

· Must successfully meet Grade 3 for Prep Route Out / Weld Blend

· Must be able to successfully complete weld blend training program within (3) months unless otherwise instructed by Area Leader. Tests based on successful results in Blend limits and Visual criteria according to the Work Instructions.

· Previous experience in routing out casting defects and blending welds preferred.

· Mechanical ability required.

Job Responsibilities:

· Blend welds for repair / production weld castings

· All weld blenders will be required to prep weld as needed.

· All weld blenders will be required to perform finishing, rework, and metal cleaning as needed associated with a metal cell operator (MCO).

Job Summary:

This position is responsible to assist the Weld Engineer in training of production TIG welders at workstations and/or classroom, ensuring a safe work environment, and ensuring compliance in training to written instructions (Welder Trainee Program, Activity Instructions / Product Criteria / EO’s / Plant rules).

· Maintains a positive atmosphere and cooperation in the training environment

· Maintains confidentiality of information

· Trains on work procedures (Activity Instructions / Product Criteria and/or other written instructions)

· Relies on experience and judgment to assist Weld Engineer/Area Leaders with the evaluation of trainee(s). As training evolves, need to use judgment for the level of training assistance provided.

· Recognize when problems exist in the training and take immediate action with the Area Leader and/or Weld Engineer

· Maintains safe and healthy training environment by following organization standards and legal regulations.

· Requisitions tools and supplies required for training

· Ensure standard work is followed via audits

· Discuss issues / best practices and/or opportunities in training with Weld Engineer/Area Leader

· Continue to work on parts, as needed, to keep product flowing thru the department.

· Other work duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

· This position requires a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

· Technical 2-yr degree or certification preferred.

· A training program must be sufficiently completed to acquire certain knowledge and skills

Skills and Abilities :

· Six to twelve months on-the-job training required for satisfactory job proficiency

Experience :

· Formal weld classroom training preferred or equivalent work experience.

  • Sitting in chairs (swivel, padded, and adjustable) approximately 75% of the time, standing approximately 25% of the time

  • Visual monitoring of computer screens

  • Visual viewing of processing equipment, precision measuring instruments, prints, reports, manuals, procedures and an assortment of printed items

  • Visual requirements for this position are close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

  • Weld helmet and gloves required

  • Clean work areas and maintain a clean work environment; perform 5S cleaning activities as required.

  • Must wear weld helmet and gloves

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to welding fumes, welder’s arc, potential of low voltage shock, moderate heat during the summer months and rather confined space. The employee will be occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts, exposed to fumes or airborne particles, welder’s arc, potential of low voltage shock, moderate heat during the summer months, and confined spaces. The noise level is moderate.
